Subject: [*] AutoLaunch 1.0.8

AutoLaunch is a screen saver "engine" that launches an application after
your Macintosh has been idle for a specified amount of time. It's great
for running stand-alone MacroMedia Director movies as screen savers,
executing AppleScript applets during idle time, restarting demos after a
person walks away from an in-store Mac, etc. It will also keep
applications like FileMaker Pro Server in the foreground so they run
faster when the server is unattended.

AutoLaunch is capable of locating an application anywhere on a Mac's
hard disk, making distribution of Director presentations much easier -
you don't have to worry about installation procedures or that users will
move the presentation to another folder - it'll always work.

A new capability in this release will make web browsers periodically
cycle through a list of URLs, letting you display your favorite web
pages during idle time! It currently requires some ResEdit manipulation
to set the URLs, but future versions will provide a user interface if
interest merits it.

Subject: [*] BulkRate 2.5.2

Welcome to BulkRate 2.5.2. This document contains important info not
included in the manual.

BulkRate is an offline reader for FirstClass BBSs that runs on the
Macintosh. It can capture messages for offline reading and replying,
and can automatically retrieve attached files for you. BulkRate is
shareware - $25 US.

Shareware payments are now handled via Kagi. Use the Register program
included with BulkRate, or register via the World-Wide-Web:
<http://kagi.direct.net/cgi-bin/register1.cgi?IH>

If you re-upload BulkRate to other BBSs or services, please include all
the files that came with it, especially the documentation.

Send bug reports or suggestions to greg_neagle@kagi.com or to the OneNet
BulkRate conference.

Note that my e-mail address has changed.

BulkRate 2.5 adds support for TCP/IP connections to FirstClass servers,
and in addition can make use of any available serial port for "normal"
modem connections - even PC Card modems.

Version 2.5.2 notes * Fixed some more date/time display problems that
occured with certian non-US date formats.

* Fixed a bug in the file transfer routines.

* Added a delay between BBSs when calling mulitple BBSs with a script -
this is the same as the redial delay.

* Fixed a recurring bug that occured when BulkRate was waiting for
certain responses from the server; one occasional symptom of this bug
was a "Could not confirm message was sent" error.

* Increased the time BulkRate will wait while trying to establish a TCP
connection.

Subject: [*] CacheSaver 1.0.2

This is an update to CacheSaver, a shareware control panel designed to
periodically flush the Mac's disk cache to minimize data loss when your Mac
crashes. This release fixes display problems on small-format Mac screens
(Plus, SE, SE/30, and Classic models).

Like many people, you've probably found that increasing the size of the
disk cache in the Memory control panel can improve the performance of many
applications, especially web browsers like Netscape Navigator. The disk
cache speeds up disk input and output by keeping the contents of files in
RAM, rather than immediately reading or writing them on the disk.

The problem with using a large disk cache is that when you save
information, the data may end up staying in the cache for quite a while
before it really gets written to your hard disk. If your Mac crashes
before the cache gets saved, your data is lost.

CacheSaver addresses this problem by periodically saving (or "flushing")
the disk cache, thus minimizing data loss should your Macintosh crash while
you are working. You can set CacheSaver to flush the cache whenever your
Mac is idle for more than a specific amount of time, or it can do it
automatically at regular intervals. CacheSaver also provides a hotkey so
you can flush the disk cache manually.

In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:

This program may be included on the Info-Mac and Umich CD-ROMs.

Subject: [*] Hyper-Stack Player Pro-68k

Hyper-Stack Player Pro-68k Copr. 1995-96 Bruce A. Pokras

Hyper-Stack Player Pro ("HSP Pro") is a player for HyperCard stacks
which provides the functionality of all versions of Apple's HyperCard
Player up to and including the lastest version, 2.3.5. So if your Mac
did not come with HyperCard Player 2.2 or 2.3, you can use HSP Pro
instead. Available separately for 680x0 Macs (68k version) and for Power
Macs (PPC version). HSP Pro is an upgrade of my previously released
Hyper-Stack Player 2.3.

***A special new feature is HSP Pro's built-in ability to view and edit
scripts and the contents of locked and/or hidden fields.***

HSP Pro goes further than just allowing you to merely use HyperCard
stacks: - create buttons which you can link to your favorite stacks
(size, color and style are customizable. You can even add a monochrome
icon of your choice); - use the "Print Stack..." and "Print Field..."
menu commands of the "File" menu (these are ordinarily disabled in
Apple's Player); - view and edit the contents of fields (even locked and
hidden ones); - view and edit the scripts which make HyperCard stacks
work; - add buttons to other stacks to give them added features; - other
new features over previous versions are described in an "HSP Pro New
Features" file which is included. Some features require a registration
code for activation.

HSP Pro provides a good way for school computer labs to provide access
to their HyperCard stacks. A password protection scheme prevents the
students from making any unauthorized changes.

Shareware $10/Mac; Site licenses $50/site (e.g., school computer labs or
a single corporate location). Free upgrade for registrants of previous
versions (or anyone who registers a previous version by February 28,
1997. See the included "HSP Upgrading & Special Offer" file).

HSP Pro can be registered world-wide by credit card using either E-mail
(with automatically encrypted credit card info), fax or snail-mail
through the Kagi Shareware service. Kagi also accepts checks (payable in
U.S. dollars) and cash (a number of non-U.S. currencies are supported).

Subject: [*] Internet Logger v. 2.1

Internet Logger v. 2.1 is a utility application allows you to keep
track of how much time you spend on your internet accounts. It requires
System 7 or later. It can also be used to track long distance telephone
use or to track time spent on client accounts. First, among many other
potential uses, Internet Logger will provide a convenient means to fully
document your internet connections, including:

Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month. Ability
to enter complex session rate structures and automatically estimate
session and cumulative costs by day or month. Ability to count down time
remaining on either prepaid hours or hours charged at a flate rate.
Optional Log file documenting session and cumulative times and estimated
costs. Optionally compute session times by rounding up to the nearest
minute. Some online services seem to compute times this way. You can
check it yourself. Allows automatic connection via PPP, SLIP, or
operation as a manual timer. Allows multiple timers with individual
settings. You can keep track of use of multiple providers conveniently.
Each can have it's own log file. Compatibility with Open Transport when
used with OT/PPP. FreePPP v 2.5 or earlier are also supported.

New features in version 2.1:

OT/PPP support - to connect with OT/PPP just select OT/PPP in the
Preferences.

Resizable Timer Window - if the timer window is too small, Shift-click
on the window and drag to resize the window. Once resized you can
enlarge the fonts.

Timers created with version 1.x are not compatible with version 2.x. Do
not try to open Timers created with version 1.x. Instead, keep version
2.x in its own folder and create new timers using version 2.x. You may
continue to use v. 1.x simultaneously if you need to time two things at
once.

Thank you,

Eric Preston

Subject: [*] Italian Verbs 1.2.5 - foreign language teaching

"Italian Verbs 1.2.5" - Update.

The inflection of verbs is one of the difficult parts of learning Italian
since there are many irregular verbs. "Italian Verbs 1.2.5" is a database
that helps you to learn and refresh your knowledge about the rules for the
inflection of verbs. The database contains 1060 verbs.
There are 9 predefined custom groups of verbs: * irregular verbs with
suffix -ire,
* irregular verbs with suffix -are,
* irregular verbs with suffix -ere,
* intransitive regular verbs with suffix -are that form compound tenses
with "avere",
* 50/100/150/200/250 most common verbs.

To open this database you should use the application "Verbs & Nouns"
version 1.2.9 or higher (/info-mac/edu/lang/).

The program "Verbs & Nouns" allows to:
* modify the database,
* practise inflection or translation of verbs, * generate tests (with full
statistic of results), * record sound and make notes about the verbs, *
merge many databases into a single one.

the second part in my series of programs for foreign language teaching and
learning (the first program I released was "Verbs & Nouns"). With the
Language Writer you can prepare the interactive lessons in minutes. To set
up a lesson you just use the set of predefined multimedia items specially
designed for the foreign language study. You can just drag and drop these
items into the convenient locations in the lesson's window, paste pictures,
movies, record sound, and enter sentences, translation, grammar notes or

Ported from Frodo v3.1b by Christian Bauer Macintosh Port by Richard

Icons by Shiva Thomas

New in v3.1.5
- Implemented a Speed indicator. This is turned off by default but you
can turn it on the options menu. Note that this does not appear at all
in the 640x480 full-screen mode. - Cleaned up the Graphic Initialisation
routines - fixing a display problem in 640x480 mode and that ugly
glimpse of a single size window while loading. - Changed the version
number scheme - it was too confusing considering that the Beta versions
of MacFrodo had been numbered v3.1b1, etc. - Implemented "Better 1541
Emulation" in the Mac port. This allows some titles like "Bart vs the
Space Mutants" and "Turtles" to work. - Fixed a stupid bug that caused
the speed limiter to be disabled after inserting a disk.

- MacFrodo is Freeware!
- MacFrodo runs on 640x480 screens in double size mode, but for the best
reproduction of the C64 display you should set your monitor to 800x600
mode. 8-Bit colour is the recommended depth.
- SAM, the built in Frodo debugger, has not been implemented in the
Macintosh port.
- The keyboard layout is in the original Commodore 64 format.
- The joystick is implemented as the numeric keypad. Both 5 and 0 are
fire. To change the joystick port, use the swap joysticks menu item.
- Disks or tapes can be inserted into drives 8, 9, 10, and 11.
- You can reset the emulated Commodore 64 by pressing F12 (or using the
command in the menubar).
- Frodo SC is a lot slower than the regular Frodo but it runs a lot more
software in D64 format due to the single-cycle emulation.
- When you switch Better 1541 Emulation on or off all the disks/tapes
are ejected.

MultiMaker lets you make your own multiple choice tests (with 2-5

various kinds (multi-choice, keyword, short-answer, gap-filling etc).
Eventually this should become a complete test-management solution for
educational establishments which will allow certain types of testing to

Subject: [*] PHOTOCAT 1.0 fr - PICTURE CATALOGUER

=A9 1996, Thierry Maire, CH-1545 Chevroux, Switzerland

PhotoCat is the best tool for working quickly and efficiently on a large
database of pictures; it's also the ideal tool to put one's holiday
pictures in order.

PRESENTATION PhotoCat allows to easily build catalogs of pictures, for
instance from a Photo-CD. PhotoCat offers extended search capabilities,
allowing you to quickly find the picture needed. The user is able to
attach more than ten keywords to a picture, allowing for very accurate
search of the catalog. Pictures recorded into a PhotoCat catalog can be
rasterized (compacted) to decrease the size of the catalog. Adding,
exporting, deleting, transferring pictures are all very easy to do.

REQUIREMENTS Macintosh Computer - System 7.0 or more - Processor 68020
or more - QuickTime installed - Color display, 256 colors or more -
Monitor size 14 inches or more - RAM needed for PhotoCat to run: 4096 Ko
or more (advised: 5096 Ko) - Fonts needed: Monaco 9, Chicago 12, Geneva
10/12 and, for printing, Times 12/14

VERSIONS There are 68K and PowerMac versions of PhotoCat. **** Photocat
existe aussi en version fran=E7aise ****

PhotoCat is a shareware. You can test it during 30 days. If you want it
to keep, you have to pay registering fee.

Symbionts 2.7 - is an extension that monitors the startup process.
Symbionts displays the name and number of bytes of memory each system
extension allocates from the system heap. The name and number appear
beneath the extension's icon, and since the name is usually truncated,
Symbionts also displays it in the menu bar. Symbionts even shows the
icons for those extensions that don't normally reveal themselves.
Symbionts Control is a control panel that sets the preferences for the
Symbionts extension. It also allows the review of the information
collected by the Symbionts extension. Additionally, the control panel is
used to manage the loading of system extensions without having to dig
around in the System folder. Extension can be enabled and disabled

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 1.3 - foreign language teaching

Here is the new (1.3), improved version of the "Verbs & Nouns" application.

The inflection of words is one of the most difficult parts of learning many
foreign languages since there are numerous inflection patterns.
"Verbs&Nouns" is an application that helps you to learn these patterns and
refresh your knowledge about the rules for the inflection of verbs and
nouns in a foreign language. The program has many other useful features to
help you to learn or research a foreign language.

The program lets you create a database of verbs or nouns in a foreign
language. You can easily construct the inflection patterns (rules) for
words that are regular. You can include other information about each word,
such as a translation, grammar characteristics, comments, etc. in a
convenient form. Comments are useful for storing examples of the use of the
word, or for recording other information. The facility for merging
databases makes it easy to share comments with other users. The program has
an exercise window. It automatically generates exercises to allow you to
practise inflection or translation. You can collect the words that you have
already learned and let the program generate exercises just for this group
of words. You can also identify many other groups of words (and collect
them in classes) to use them in exercises or for browsing. The program has
asynchronous sound support to associate the sound samples with words.

WWW Sites is a small HyperCard stack which holds the World Wide Web

There is also room for notes. I keep it running in the corner of my

There is an other (very good) piece of software, called
COPSTALK, look at http://www.copstalk.com for more info.
It works for Win 3.1 and Win95. It makes those machines
speak AppleTalk, so that they can make use of Apple servers
and can print to Apple printers. It has to be installed on
each PC. Win 3.1 needs version 1.2f, while Win95 needs
version 2.0. Win 3.1 has the limitation of speaking a
maximum of (if I remember well 2) protocols. So if this
machine runs TCP/IP, AppleTalk would be the second protocol.
You don't have the possibility to speak another protocol than
(as for example IPX). Win95 doesn't have that limitation.
And if you buy one of the Apple Servers, this package
(version 2.0) is FREE (on one of the networking CD's) !
For us here (we have also a mixed Mac/PC environment),
this package works just fine.

Success with your Apple Server !

Pardon my skepticism, but i'm not going to start giving broderbund any
awards just yet. I've taken over the keeping of our family tree after my
father died in December. He was using FTM for Windows. I asked if the
yet-to-be-released Mac version would be able to read the Windows
files--not an unusual request, given the precedents set even by
Mac-hating Microsoft, where a Word file is a Word file is a Word file.
The Broderbund service person I spoke to was abrupt to the point of
rudeness, and acted as if I had asked something incredibly stupid, and
answered that the new Mac version was not compatible. Well, I'm
switching over to Reunion. Damned if I'm going to spend $90 (not to
mention re-type our rather large family history) on a piece of software
designed by a company not smart enough (or who didn't care enough) to do
something as basic as making the files cross-platform compatible.

The speed of printing is most likely limited by the serial connection. In
all likelihood, the data is trickling through that serial line at a much
slower rate than it needs to be. Do you know what data rate the serial
port is set to?

On my IIg, switch setting 5 sets the serial port to 9600 bps. Switch
setting 2 sets the serial port to 19200 bps. Using one of the configurable
switch settings would allow me to set the serial port data rate up to 57600
bps.

I would imagine that the IINT would allow similar configuration. I'd tell
you for sure, but I can't find one on the network today ;).

Peter,

I have borrowed my inlaws pb100 on several occassions and was having
trouble running it from a fully charged battery. After many hours
searching the Tech Info Library I found several docs relating to these
problems.

It seems that the 110v power adaptor has a little 'o' ring on the end
that plugs into the machine. If that is lost (according to apple this
happens frequently) it will fry the logic board. Also there is a very
specific procedure to using the 110v adptor as far as how you plug it in
and which part plugs in first. If you don't use the correct procedure
the logic board is fried again. I'm not sure how the machine continues
to operate with a fried logic board but it does???????

I looked for the print out of the TIL article but could not find it (it
has the article number on it for easy reference). I suggest a look at
the TIL and perhaps a call to apple.

Good Luck,

Wayne

PS- I found that replacing the logic board costs more than the machine
is worth.

That is not correct. ClarisDraw does have a painting layer, although it is
fairly basic (i.e. not having things like anti-aliasing brushes, blending,
etc.), and PICT files (bitmapped and vector) *can* be imported. (Also some
other formats, including MacDraw II, and if I remember correctly, GIF and
TIFF). I can't say for certain whether the drawing features of ClarisDraw
are more sophisticated than SuperPaint, but I strongly suspect that they
are. Perhaps Wil was confusing it with of some other less worthy program.

Not so. You need to have Claris XTND translators installed to read a PICT
file, but this is standard Claris procedure. It also does have a reasonable
set of paint tools, although they're admittedly hard to find and not as
rich as SuperPaint's.

Despite a lot of negativity surrounding Deneba these days, I've had good
luck with Canvas 5 and found it to be a more than adequate (if somewhat
pricey) replacement for SuperPaint. Also, it is *much* more capable at
paint-style manipulation than ClarisDraw. It's a keeper for me.

>Do y'all have any suggestions for publicly available news servers?

Al, this was a great post. (Echoing Ian's remark in the same digest, we
all wish there were more hours in a day, so we could see more of you!)

You may know of this one, pubnews, others here may too. I tremble a bit
putting it up though, as sometimes (quite often recently) it's down; and
also it's just such a valuable resource when it does work - and lots of
folk read here! But anyway...

pubnews.demon.co.uk

I've not checked my global list for pubnews recently, but it's got a _lot_
of groups. My own provider, for instance, doesn't carry the 'from japan'
fj groups, but pub's got them...
