Subject: [*] AppleTalk Access 1.0.1 OSAX

This is a great scripting addition which will allow you to do three things: get
the status of AppleTalk, turn AppleTalk on, and turn AppleTalk off.

I have a PowerBook 520 with only one serial port. This means that I cannot use
a
modem and AppleTalk at the same time. I like to be able to turn AppleTalk off
before running my modem related applications. This OSAX allows me to do this by
writing a script to run my modem related applications. It requires AppleScript
1.1 in order to run.

1.0.1 - 02.20.97 - I encountered a problem in which if you are using Classic
Networking it would not set AppleTalk to be on after restart. I also added the
ability for appletalk status to return "active on restart" in these
situations.
And it now works with a try statement.

Subject: [*] AppleTree1.0.3 - a multinomial modelling application

AppleTree is an application for fitting multinomial models of arbitrary size to
frequency data using the "General Processing Tree" algorithm developed by Hu
and
Batchelder (1994). AppleTree can read model files and data files written for
the
MS-DOS "MBT" program developed by Xiangen Hu, University of Memphis,
Tennessee.
AppleTree is freeware. It runs natively on both 680x0 and PowerPC Macs.

See <http://www.psychologie.uni-trier.de:8000/projects/AppleTree.html> for
latest informations.

Changes since version 1.0: For identifiability checks, all free parameters are
reported in every run together with G-Square values. Redesign of the grafical
tree generation algorithm. The former algorihm was not able to find a tree
corresponding to the equations in all cases. Redesign of the parameter list for
easier editing Minor cosmetic changes

Requirements MacOS 7.5 or later Motorola 68020 or better (no FPU required)
or any PowerPC Macintosh. PowerMac recommended.

Subject: [*] BarbaBatch 2.0 Demo

These are the demo's of BarbaBatch 2.0, and its additional utilities.
The Macintosh package batch-converts to and from the sound file formats
SoundDesigner I and II, AIFF, WAV, VOC 8 & 16 bits, NeXt SUN.au, NeXt
SUN.snd, Quicktime, System 7 Sound, Microsoft ADPCM, AIFC, 8SVX, AVR and
provides the highest quality sample rate conversion among soundfile
converters, look ahead peak limiting, gating, normalizing, word size
conversion, region extraction, several stereo to mono conversions, optional
dithering and much more. All parameters on a whole batch of differing
files, from all 11 formats if required, can be set up before running the
conversion as a background process, and the speed of the process is
increased when run on a PowerPC or using a DigiDesign audio card (ProTools
II, Audio Media II) on a 680x0 machine. BarbaBatch incorporates a file and
folder play function, is Apple Scriptable and supports full drag & drop.
For maximum clarity the input file hierarchy is copied to the output and a
detailed log file is produced.

The demo yields, when not using a digidesign card, 10 seconds of converted
audio in every output AIFF file in order to show off the high conversion
quality. It requires a PowerPC, or a 680x0 Mac with an FPU.

The demo's of the complementary batch renamer NameIt, the text-list based
file mover MoveIt,the utility that allows batch conversion using
SoundDesigner plug-ins JoinIt, and the in-soundfile region renamer AffixIt
are also included in this archive.

If possible, we would like this complete archive to be included on the
commercially available CD-ROM of the sumex archive.

Subject: [*] Default Folder 2.7.1

Following is a submission of Default Folder 2.7.1. It should replace any
previous versions of Default Folder in the archives.

Default Folder is a shareware control panel that enhances Open and Save dialog
boxes to make it easier for you to manage files on your Macintosh. It provides
many of the essential features of the commercial SuperBoomerang and Directory
Assistance utilities, but without the infrequently used extras that take their
toll in compatibility, memory, and CPU usage.

Default Folder's time-saving Open and Save dialog enhancements allow you to:

Set up a default folder for any or all applications. Switch among recently
used folders from a pop-up menu. See available disk space and switch between
disks from a pop-up menu. Click on a Finder window to display it in an Open or
Save dialog. Open the folder shown in an Open or Save dialog in the Finder.
Create folders, get information (including changing name, type, and
creator), and move items to the Trash from within file dialogs. "Rebound"
back to the last
file you used. Make "Replace" the default option instead of "Cancel" when
saving a file with the same name as an existing file. Speed up the display of
Open and Save dialogs by turning off custom color icons in the file list.

Default Folder will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher,
and is accelerated for PowerPC. In addition to the standard internet
archives, information and updates are available at:

Changes in Galactica version 1.1 since version 1.0.8

Many Bugs have been fixed. Please see the section on Bug fixes for a full
list.

Added Event Report window that shows a detailed description of everything that
occured during the last End of Turn. Use Cmd-E to show and hide it.

Combat is now calculated differently. The population of your planet helps to
defend it, so heavily populated planets are harder to take over. Also, a
low tech ship will do a small amount of damage to a high tech ship, so a
big tech
advantage is no longer a guarranteed win (but it's still pretty important).

Ship damage is now automatically repaired at planets while they are docked.

You can now scrap ships from within the Ships in System panel. Ships must
be at a planet before they can be scrapped.

Added a Patrol mode for ships that gives them a defensive bonus while in star
systems. Systems protected by patroling ships are shown with a circle around
them.

Added a New Ship Destination feature for star systems. Use this to have newly
built ships at particular star system automatically head to a choosen
destination

Added keyboard equivalents for many commonly used buttons.

Garcia's Guitars 1.2
Non-Violent Game for You!
by Jason Rainbows' Magic Theatre Art and Design 1997

Man, ...I miss Jerry. But I think we all can be a little closer
to him by playing Garcia's Guitars.

Here's the skinny;
Jerry's back from Rock'nRoll Heaven. There's a shortage
of electric guitars up there. So, like, he's gotta come down
and hug as many guitars as possible that are flying around
in this wierd stadium parking lot. But the cops don't wanna
allow this kinda behavior so they're gonna try to bust him.

Just because he's comin' down doesn't mean he's gotta
come DOWN, man. So there's goodies to keep Captain Trips
high. Get higher Kharma Points! Bigger Bogus Points! Go
>From Cloud 9 to however high you can get!

This is an upgrade from Garcia's Guitars 1.0
I fixed the "Stoned/Normal" mode (it works now, heh) and
I made it confusing at the same time!

I also "cleaned up" the alert prompts.
Hoo-boy, did I catch he... ...heck for that! But never fear,
I didn't clean them up THAT MUCH. So there.

No more Amphetimine Speed mode. It resulted in "Nervous-
Mouse Syndrome" and was banned in several college towns.
Besides, nobody could get past Cloud 9.

Eliminated the Brown Acid preferences. Nobody liked these
anyways. Made the game no fun at-all. Go figure, eh?

Hope you can dig this game and, if you run into Jerry before
I do, tell him I said Hey Now!

Subject: [*] Geoport Shut Down V1.0.2

If you use Apple's Geoport Telecom Adapter (as do I) then you may have
noticed that your system memory partition grows by about 400-500k when
the modem is on. This is because most all the modem software is loaded
into memory due to the fact that your Mac's CPU acts as the modems data
pump.
Now, after your data call it'd be nice to have a speedy way of
reclaiming that 500 odd K you lost to run the modem especially if your
tight on RAM.
Geoport Shut Down accomplishes this task. Simply open it, click on the
Shut Down button and 400-500k is added to the Largest Unused Block field
in About This Macintosh as GSD frees up memory.
Use in good health.

NET/Mac v2.3.62 was born...

For those who don't know NET/Mac... NET/Mac is the application that supports
TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators can use NET/Mac
for their wireless TCP/IP network...

In this version of NET/Mac the following mods/features were implemented:

Make syntax of error- and usage-messages more consistent - Slowdown the
watchcursor when processing incoming mailfiles - 1996 -> 1997 in Copyright
notices, 'rebootonbaddate' etc. - Some mods to correct my e-mail addresses
etc. Added: Availability -window in Online-Help

NET/Mac does NOT support the new Buckmaster CD-ROM's HAMCALL database yet... I
am trying to convince Buckmaster that I need the new data-encryption-method,
but
as of yet they are not ready to release a description of the
encoding-algorithm... The old CD-ROM's remain fully supported...

The latest version of NET/Mac can be downloaded from my homepage:
http://www.caiw.nl/~adam

This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/inet/conn/radio-net-mac in
the Sumex-Aim.stanford.edu (and it's mirror-) archives.

It also replaces /pub/mac/_communicatie/_internet/radio_net_mac_23xx.hqx on

Subject: [*] Sleeper 2.1.1d (German version)

Here is the German version of Sleeper 2.1.1, the popular "Energy Saver for
the rest of us." Special thanks go to Christoph Sahm for his work in
localizing Sleeper. Please place this alongside the English and French
versions already in the archives.

Sleeper is a shareware control panel for desktop Macintoshes and Power
Macintoshes that dims the screen, powers down Energy Star compliant
monitors, and spins down disk drives after periods of inactivity. This
saves energy and reduces noise levels in your work area without forcing you
to shut down your Mac.

Because Sleeper does not rely on Apple's Power Manager, Sleeper will work
on any Macintosh running System 7.0 or later, and does not suffer from some
of the quirky behavior reported with Apple's Energy Saver 2.0. Sleeper is
well suited for unattended operations as well as personal desktop use. For
file servers, ftp and http hosts, and fax and BBS systems, Sleeper will
wake the drives up when they are needed and put them to sleep when they are
idle. Sleeper is easily configurable; it provides hotkey control for
on-demand activation of its sleep features, and separate delay settings for
screen dimming, monitor power down, and disk sleep.

Sleeper will work on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, including
System 7.6, and will spin down both IDE and SCSI hard drives. The screen
saver feature requires a color-capable Macintosh, and Energy Star monitor
support requires an Energy Star compliant Macintosh (any Mac on which
Apple's Energy Saver control panel works) and an Energy Star capable
monitor. Sleeper supports SCSI Manager 4.3 in native mode on all machines
and requires only 26K of memory when operating.

In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are
available at:

	 <http://www.stclairsw.com/>

Sleeper may be included on the Info-Mac and UMich CD-ROMs.

freeware/shareware). Even better, you can launch URLs directly from inside t=

with
the proper helper applications.

To provide all the features and flexibility needed by international users,
Software & Hardware Tracker distinguishes between the author or authors of a
program, the company that makes it and the one that distributes it.

Moreover, Software & Hardware Tracker differentiates between hardware produc=
ts,
commercial software products and freeware/shareware programs since different
kinds of information are needed when dealing with each category of items. Fo=
r
instance, a commercial software package usually comes with a serial number t=

works no matter what user name you use. But a shareware program will come=
 with a
registration code based on personnal info, such as your name and address.
Software & Hardware Tracker takes those differences and subtleties into acco=

Software & Hardware Tracker is shareware and costs $10 (though you can also =

it as freeware: see the enclosed documentation for conditions and limitation=

Subject: [*] sound volume adjusters.sit

Here are 16 little fat binary applications whose sole purpose in life is to
change the speaker volume on your mac. Eight of them change the default sound
output volume, eight of them change the alert sound volume. Sure, you could do
the same thing with applescript, but these are much faster and smaller. Sound
Manager 3.0 or greater is required to run these.

Here's some suggestions for what to do with them: a. Put them in a folder
within
your Apple Menu Items folder, so that you can change sound and alert volumes
without opening the sound control panel.

b. To make your startup chime very quiet, put the file "set sound vol 0" --
or an alias to it -- into your shutdown items folder. Put another file, say
"set sound vol 5", into the startup items folder to set the sound volume of
your mac after the chime plays.

These are free and may be freely distributed, provided they are not altered and
this Read me file is distributed with them. You may put them on a CD, provided
you send me a copy.

Subject: [*] Text Indexer 1.1.1 - Instant Text Searches!

Plug-in module for UltraFind 2.5.2

UF Text Indexer is a modern indexing engine for Mac & PowerPC that can
pre-index
your documents making text searches not just fast - but instant.

Designed to allow text searches with Context display (shows the actual
sentences
the words were found in), it indexes target sets of folders which can be
anywhere on your hard disk or network, or even on CD-ROMs or on off-line
volumes. (so you don't need to have your files on-line to text search
them!)

Also unlike normal indexers, it can search on *parts* of words as well as whole
words, and it will index all languages - including Japanese. It is also highly
accurate and will never produce false hits.

While indexing provides super-fast access to your documents, the downside
is that
the indexing process itself is naturally very slow, and should be done either
in
the background or at night (You would not want watch a few thousand documents
being indexed). However, because the UltraFind Text Indexer is *incremental*,
it
does not need to re-index everything, instead it only indexes new or updated
documents, making re-indexing simple and very fast.

1.0 - 1.1.1 WHAT'S NEW?

Fixed problem that could cause a freeze after indexing large files Increased
indexing speed (now very much faster!) Added automatic remembering of folders
to
index Improved incremental reindexing

This is the Japanese version of "The Alphabet".

This program is used to help children and students of a foreign language
accomplish the following:

1. Learn the alphabet for the language in question.
2. Learn a basic vocabulary including the following using
3. Word recognition

The program has four modes of operations, including three exercise
modules. In addition, the program can be set up to keep track of the
progress of the student by keeping track of the results of each exercise,
and printing a report at the end.

Mode 1: At the main menu, you can click on any of the letters on
the screen. You will then hear the pronunciation of the letter in
question.

Mode 2: Find the letter exercise. The program displays a letter
and after a delay, the letter is hidden. The student must then find that
letter on the screen and click on it. The program will allow three tries
before giving the correct answer. In that case, the computer will show the
letter and say it.
The delay is variable depending on the student$B%f(Js response time, and will
adjust to the ability of the student.

Mode 3: Find the missing letter. The program says a word and
writes it on the screen. After a delay (variable as in the previous
exercise), one of the letters is hidden. The student must then click on
the missing letter. The program will allow three tries before giving the
correct answer. In any event, the program will say the missing letter,
spell the word, and say it.

Mode 4: Find the missing word. The program will ask the student to
find a specific word. This word is written and spoken. After a variable
delay, the word is hidden, and four choices will appear. The student must
click on the missing word. The program will allow two tries before giving
the correct answer. In all cases, the program will say the word, spell it,
and say it again before generating another exercise.

features to help you to learn or research a foreign language. It can be
used as a dictionary as well. It can automatically search the database to
find a word copied to the clipboard for instance.

The program lets you create a database of words in a foreign
language. You can easily construct the inflection patterns (rules) for
words that are regular. You can include other information about each
word, such as a translation, grammar characteristics, comments, etc. in
a convenient form. Comments are useful for storing examples of the use
of the word, or for recording other information. The facility for
merging databases makes it easy to share comments with other users. The
program has an exercise window. It automatically generates exercises to
allow you to practise inflection or translation. You can identify many
groups of words (and collect them in classes) to use them in exercises
or for browsing. The program has sound support to associate
the sound samples with words.

There are some inflection dictionaries written this program already.
There are: Italian Verbs and Nouns, Polish Verbs and Nouns,
Russian Verbs and Nouns, Swiss-German Verbs and Nouns,
Greek Verbs. I've also adopted a huge public domain English to English
dictionary to use with this program.

Subject: [*] Virtual 1.6, a multiple virtual screens manager

German Version
If you're familiar with X-Windows workstations, you have probably used one
virtual window manager or other. Virtual is one of those, for the Mac. It
presents you with multiple 'virtual screens' where you can place your
windows, so you don't have a clutter of them on your real screen. You can
switch virtual
screens with a key combination, or by choosing that screen in the Virtual
window. You can drag windows around to move them to other screens, and so
on.

New features since Virtual 1.5.2:

foremost: improved speed and compatibility.

ability to name virtual screens (option-click in the virtual screen).

much better handling of floating windows.

compatibility with multiple monitor setups.

many more small improvements.

Virtual is now available in English, French and German. Japanese will be
released
within a couple of days.

Regular updates are provided at http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/People/paour/VirtualF/

$10 Shareware.
