Subject: [!] Where are the programs?

I have seen a lot of interesting abstracts lately, but very few new
programs in the archives, at any of the sites/mirrors. Where are they
going?

== Bob Sander-Cederlof <bobsc@macromedia.com>, <bsander-cederlof@acd.org>
== Macromedia, Digital Arts Group, 251 W. Renner Pkwy, Richardson, TX 75080
== Phone:  (972) 664-7260            FAX: (972) 680-0537

[First off, no [*] message can make it into the archive unless there is
a matching file in the archive. We have scripts that check for that, and,
baring (sp?) a bug, that catches almost all cases of missing files.

Now, last week, we had some trouble with a setting on one of the Macs that
was processing the files. The result was it uploaded .hqx files in macbinary
format. Ops! The archivists then removed the files and have been adding them
back in, slowly. I suspect that is why lots of files have gone missing.

We also just stumbled across the same thing (i.e. -- we were bitten twice).
This means my lunch hour today will be spent writing a script that will
prevent these from being added to the archive (thus prevent the [*] from
appearing till the format is correct) and will also make sure the binhex is
in the correct format so that a whole binhex file does not appear in the
.abs files.

Sorry about the problem. -Gordon]

Aardvark Smooth, Very Smooth & Ultra Smooth
Versions 1.0 =A9 1997 BouncyWare=81

Here's three colour schemes for Kaleidoscope 1.0.1. They're sort of based on
Aaron, but they're smooth (or, indeed, very smooth). I think they're quite g=
ood,
but I'm new at this, so what do I know? To use them, drop them into your
'Kaleidoscope Color Schemes' folder. If you don't have one, you may have a r=
are,
mystically enchanted, copy of Kaleidoscope that doesn't require a computer. =
If
so, real Aardvarks may change colours before your very eyes. Or you may be o=
n
drugs. Or you may not have a copy of Kaleidoscope. Whatever.

Try them, you might like them. If you don't, throw 'em away. What have you l=

These colour schemes are completely free, because if you sent me money, I'd =
just
get all embarrassed. I don't know what else to tell you.

Airport IDs is a little utility that allows one to search for Airport/City
locations by name or ID code. It returns all records that match your criteria.
This is a great tool for travelers who want to create intineraries, check the

Attached please ChaosPoetry Generator, a HyperCard writing tool designed to
spark
the creative juices, brough to you by Poetry Ink Productions, publishers of
Poetry Ink (ISSN 1091-0999) electronic literary magazine.

ChaosPoetry Generator generates chaos poetry from user-definable lists of
words.
CPG is intended to get the creative juices flowing and help writers and other
creative personages get over the hump of writers' block. Of course, this is
just
a skanky hack of a toy, but it might help you out.

CPG requires version 2.1 or higher of HyperCard or the HyperCard Player. It has
been tested under System 7.1, 7.5.3, and 7.5.5 on a Macintosh Color Classic, a
Centris 610, a PowerBook 520, and various PowerPC-based Performas with no undue
side effects. However, we do not warrant this software to be totally devoid of

Subject: [*] ConvertMachine 1.1.1

ConvertMachine is mostly a batch processing utility to convert sound format
files
to a desired type. This means it performs one or more of the following without
user interaction: decompression, resampling (sample rate conversion), mixing
(stereo to mono) and compression. You don't need to worry about what format
the
input file is in; all you specify is the desired output format. Finder Sound
files (sfil), AIFF files, WAVE files, Sound Designer II, AU Mu-law and
linear and
QuickTime Audio (Movies) can be freely converted. It is $10 Shareware; the
enclosed "Register" application facilitates easy payment through Kagi
Shareware.

You can save your popular Settings under as a menu item or as a separate
Settings
file. The common web formats are flagged and ready to use as defaults, such as
audio/basic mono 8kHz mu-law, as well as JAVA audio.

After conversion files can be automatically sent to SoundMachine for playing.

Now supports the Sound Designer II Format on both input and output. Empty
resource fork left by QuickTime is now stripped from AIFF, WAVE and AU
files. New
web site and contact information on Splash Screen. New Convert Folder... option
under File menu. Removed restrictions on file type for drag and drop
conversion.
Small robustness improvements.

System Requirements
It needs QuickTime 2.1 and Apple's Sound Manager 3.1 or later.
If you have installed System 7.5.3 or later then, no worries,
you have these.

=46RACTAL TREES - a bare bones fractal tree modeler.
=A9 1997 Simon Woodside <sbwoodside@uwaterloo.ca>

=46ractal Trees may only be distributed in complete form, and must include t=
his
copyright notice.

=46ractal Trees is freeware. If you like it, please email the author, Simon
Woodside <sbwoodside@uwaterloo.ca>.

It is provided with no warantees whatsoever. It does not follow very many
of the
Apple human interface guidelines. Its parameters can only be modified in th=
e
source code.

Source code is provided so that - if you have a C++ compiler - you can play =
with
the settings, etc. The project file is for CodeWarrior.

=46ractal Trees demonstrates the use of fractal geometry to describe natural
objects. It draws, in two dimensions, a tree-like silhouette, using fractal
techniques.

The construction of the tree is very simple: each branch has two children
branches that are a certain fraction of the parent's length, and are at a
certain
angle to the parent. The process of adding subbranches is continued to a
certain
depth (default 14 subbranches).

Randomness has been introduced to produce tree silhouettes that more closely
match actual trees. The randomness is gaussian (ie uses the normal
distribution), and affects both the length and angle of the branches.

The entire model is generated and stored in memory before being drawn.

The tree is different every time the program is run .. just like a real=
 tree! (
... trade them with friends!)

This file may be included on the info-mac CD-ROM.

menu, you can select whether or not to bypass the dialog that appears when
AppleTalk is active. * Jeremy's Battery Time CSM - Displays Apple's remaining
battery time on PowerBooks that are capable of it. It can also "learn" the
battery life on any model of PowerBook, or display the elapsed battery time. *
Jeremy's Temperature CSM - Displays the internal temperature of a PowerBook Duo
or PowerBook 500 series. * Jeremy's Application CSM - Displays a count of
currently running applications and DA's. Also has popup menu that lets you
select foreground application. * Jeremy's AppleTalk CSM - Replaces Apple's
AppleTalk CSM, but displays more information. * Jeremy's EnergyStrip CSM -
Replaces the PowerBook or Energy Saver Control Panel, and lets you adjust power
conservation settings from the Control Strip.

Release 1.6.3 adds OpenTransport support to the AppleTalk CSM. The
Application CSM also now displays background applications.

Subject: [*] ouchMe 1.1.2

touchMe is an application program to change the creation and/or
modification date time stamp of any Macintosh files or folders.
It is like Unix command "touch".

To run the program, it requires System 7.1 or later. Under System
7.5, touchMe is also AppleScriptable and allows to accept drag &
drop operations. The program is written under the Metrowerks C++
application framework of CodeWarrior PowerPlant. And, the package
includes a set of its source codes.

Changes since 1.1.1, published on August 8, 1996
 - New. You can now drag the date time string among the edit fields.
 - New. For AppleScript commands "touch" and "fetch", they are now
accepting both single file or a list of files as target files.
 - New. With the option-key pressed, Set-Present-Time button will
clear the time part, that means a midnight.
 - Bug. It sometimes failed to hilite the border of touchMe window
when you drag the files with option-key pressed. Fixed it, I hope.
 - New. The C++ compiler was changed to CW11 from CW9 of CodeWarrior
PowerPlant. Due to this change on LApplication class, I have to
update my CHelpMenu class to enable the "Help touchMe" item of
   the help menu.
 - New. Added an Apple Guide file. I hope this guide file will be of
   much help to you.

touchMe is a freeware.
You can distribute it without any limitations nor permissions.

Subject: [*] serial control

Jung-Wook Cho
1997. 2. 12.

"SerialControl" is application and hardware device to control external devices
using Macintosh through serial port of Macintosh.

It is really hard to interface something to Macintosh unlike old Apple II or
IBM-PC. The slot of AppleII and ISA(or EISA) of IBM-PC(or compatible) has
relatively simple structure and protocol. Currently PCI bus or direct slot of
Macintosh is too complex for personal hobbyist to interface something like ADC,
DAC, digital port. "SerialControl" might solve this problem somewhat.
"SerialControl" is application(including sources) and hardware device(to make
by
yourself). It uses serial port and provides 8 TTL outputs and 8 TTL inputs with
current circuit, but you can easily expand to interface to other device like
ADC
or DAC.

You require special LSI CY233 from Cybernetic Micro Systems. Actually, CY233 is
powerful LSI for serial-parallel conversion or network. "SerialControl" just
utilizes one of its operation modes. Only demerit of this LSI is price. The
price is $45 each(16$ per 1000) except S/H. Foreigner may pay more.

This "SerialControl" is absolutely freeware. You can use this circuit, source,
and application for your personal use(absolutely not for commercial use). If
you
are going to include in CD, magazine, FTP server, or web server(except Info-Mac
archives and its mirror server), please let me know.

Subject: [*] Snavely 1.0.4

Snavely is a completely original arcade game for the Mac. In Snavely it is your
job to control two big-nosed, wriggly snakes. You have to keep them from
wandering off the edge of the playing board, and maneuver them so they cross
paths, creating an "egg" and scoring points. As you progress through the levels
of Snavely, your snakes encounter a variety of objects -- some that are useful,
and some that make trouble for you and your snakes. Snavely takes only about
one
minute to learn, but the complexity, difficulty and strategic possibilities
increase with each successive level, so it should take you a long, long time to
get bored with the game. Complete instructions to Snavely are within the game,
under the Apple menu.

Snavely is completely non-violent, making it suitable for all ages and all
sensibilities, while the higher levels of the game present a hefty
challenge even for experienced arcade-game-fiends.

Snavely can be played by one person, or by two people playing cooperatively
(one
person controlling each snake). The latter option has been applauded by parents
for the unique opportunities it provides for cooperative play for two
children or for a parent and child.

Snavely is simple to learn, but not simple-minded. For example, the "reward"
objects you encounter are not just arbitrary "power-ups". They are meaningful
tools that you can make use of to your advantage, or misuse to your peril.

Snavely is a professional quality game with smooth, fast animation,
multi-channel sound, background music, and all that cool stuff.

This is version 1.0.4 of Snavely. This version introduces the use of the Kagi
shareware payment system.

Requires: System 7.0 or later, 256 colors, any size monitor, LC or better Mac,
2000K free RAM. Shareware; $15.00

Subject: [*] synk-220.hqx

Synk 2.2.0 - is a backup/synchronization program that can resolve aliases and
archive old files. It runs on all Macintoshes except Mac Plus, Classic and
PowerBook 100. You can backup a folder full of aliases, making it simple to
modify your backup or synchronization strategy by dropping file or folder
aliases
into the defined folder. It is just as easy to distribute synchronized files
throughout a PowerBook's hard drive by synchronizing two folders containing
aliases. Any number of file types, creators and file endings may be skipped.
Obsolete files and folders can be archived into a folder.

Other features include:
 ----------------------
- complete log of actions (now unlimited in length)
- obsolete files can be deleted, trashed or archived
- collisions are conveniently placed in a folder on the Desktop

Synk 2 is $10 US shareware. Upgrades from previous version of Synk are free
to registered users.

Version History:
 ---------------
2.2.0
- added "Ignore Unmounted Volumes" option that skips backup or
synchronization of folders that are defined for unmounted volumes
- document window is now resizable because it has grown too large to fit on
small screen Macs such as the SE/30
- also fixes a few interface bugs
- fixed a crashing bug that cropped up when flipping to and from Synk a
number of times and then running a Synk document
