Subject: (Q) Eudora e-mail to AOL problem

I have two internet accounts, one at work and one at home. From my work
account I can use Eudora 4.0.1 to send e-mail to my brother on AOL. He gets
it just fine.

>From my home account (with COX@HOME) I use the same version of Eudora and
my e-mail never reaches him - no bounce back, no nothin'!. If I use the
e-mail program in Netscape, the e-mail arrives. My e-mails to other non-AOL
sites seem to arrive ok, so I think my basic settings are ok.

I talked to the techs at COX@HOME, but got told that they only support
Netscape.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can look for the source of
the problem?

Thanks.

Subject: (Q) Trying to save a vintage MacII

[ warning - long story ]

Last summer I welcomed the arrival of my AV G3 tower and I've been a
giggling speed demon ever since. Having successfully appleshared my
older machine to the G3, I transfered all the files from my vintage Mac
II's Quantum 350 drive and spent the summer filling up all the other
available space on the G3.

Last month I decided to reformat and reclaim the drive from my Mac II. I
booted up ol' Charlie and marvelled at how solid that 7.6.1 was after all
this dormant time. Having confirmed there was nothing to save on the old
drive I proceeded to try and reformat the internal. I booted off an
"emergency" floppy which had OS 7.5.3 on it and Silverlining 5.8.3 to
use. I wanted to re-combine all the divided volume space into a single
volume. I also thought I might run the Apple Disk utility afterward and
re-install the Apple Drivers because this drive could "perhaps" join me
at the G3 level. But I was only dreaming.

I didn't sit and watch the reformatting as such but I did see it begin
and glanced sidelong at it working away through two read-write tests
without an error or bad sector showing. When I halted the testing and
wanted to go right to re-formatting I got reports of incompatibility with
the drivers and -- did I want to "fix" this. Foolishly I acted before
really thinking deeply (or taking into consideration what drivers might
already be on the disk).

When a follow-up dialogue reported no success in installing the drivers
and suggested I re-boot I had no other option but to consent. Since that
moment I haven't seen the drive in question appear on any re-started,
zapped, or finagled desktops. DFA does not see the drive when I can boot
and Apple's Disk utility sees no SCSI drives connected to the machine.
There are many times when I power up and see a double boot on the monitor
and then I hear the dreaded chimes of failed RAM.

If I take the Quantum drive offline the machine boots, runs and works
pretty well (for a mini-system on a Disk Tools 1 floppy). When the drive
is reconnected to the internal ribbon cable I get the four-note chime and
then nothing.

Now, to the question(s).

What do the wise and wrinkled Info-Mac readers suggest to someone so bold
as to be attempting such a resuscitation?

How does one mount a stubbornly invisible hard drive which is likely in
need of new drivers just to answer SCSI calls?

I'm prepared to discuss [off the list should it bore those
johnny-come-latelys with PPC technology] situations concerning MODE32,
SCSI terminations, utilities, tricks, and voodoo to try and reclaim my
faithful drive.

I am hoping to install a 7.6.1 system onto an external 100 MB vintage
drive which was married to the Mac II for many years. From this I hope
to get more capacity to use serious diagnostic utilities and to attempt
another reformatting of the 350 Quantum internal. Between now and then I
would humbly accept any advice, experience or even sympathy from readers
of this list who have served people like myself so graciously in the past.

Messages beginning with, or containing "throw away the Mac II" are not
welcome.

I am suffering from a problem where events go missing:
On Word98, I have to double click the menus to get them to pull down.
In a RealBasic program I wrote, I can only keep a thread running full speed
if I sit and wiggle the mouse to create events - otherwise something eats
them.

The last time I had a problem like this it turned out to be NowAutoType
(whether active or not) - removing it solved the problem. However, this
time I can't think of anything similar that could be causing trouble.

Any ideas - either on what it might be, or how I could go about finding it?

nothing happens. Drag and drop from document to document works just fine,

It doesn't matter if I installed ATM in the System Folder or if ATM is

Subject: Couple Questions

A couple questions for you experts:

1. Apple Printer Utility: Am I missing something? I can't find a way
to make APU change the Appletalk zone of a printer. I need the old
LaserWriter Utility to actually do that. Well, actually, the last time
I needed that feature (two weeks ago), I used the Xerox printer util
that came with our N24 printer. Couldn't find LWU at the time.

This is not critical. I can get around the problem. But I keep reading
that APU can change a printer's zone, and I've never seen the option.

2. AppleShare Muckup Responsibility: I have this situation with my
secretary. Using Personal File Sharing, she can put anything she
wants on my machine and get anything from my machine. When I try
to do anything from/to her machine from my machine, the "copy"
box shows up and does absolutely nothing. I have to power down my
machine and restart. And still can't get anything to or from her.

I wiped Appleshare PDS and Appleshare Prep from her machine. No
change. I wiped both files from my machine. No change. This is
depressing.

I suspect a new system install on one of the machines might be
salutary. Not a trivial chore.

Do any of y'all know a rule of thumb for which machine is mucking
up the file transfer? Or maybe some better diagnostic techniques?

Thanks for your help

Hi All,

Just upgraded to OS 8.5 and have noticed a difference in the way sound
out is handled. I used to keep a mixer plugged into the sound output jack
on the back of the mac. I was still able to listen through the mac's
built-in speaker under 7.6.1. Now, in 8.5, when the mixer is plugged-into

disabled.

Is there any way around this?

Subject: Giving away older stuff to help the Macintosh community

Hi,

Like many readers of Info-Mac, I have a lot of older system, softwares,
utilies and documentation, which could be useful to some Macintosh users.
For example, those still working on older machines with System 6 could
switch to System 7 for free. I have the whole kit plus lot of books.
Likewise, those on System 7 could benefit from free System 7.5 from those
now on 8.1 or 8.5 Myself, I have given over a lot of stuff. I think this
should be done instead of letting the softwares and documentation sleep in
a box.

Is there a WWW site to post such offers? Are newsgroups a good place for this?

Subject: Looking for beta testers

We're putting the finishing touches on a revolutionary new
application for keeping track of your web browsing history and we're
looking for beta testers.

The application uses Apple's Information Access Toolkit (AIAT is also
used by Sherlock) to index all of the words in every web page you
visit. Later, when you want to revisit any page that you've ever
visited in the past, you only need to type in a couple of words that
describe that page to quickly return to it.

It will be compatible with System 7.1 and later, PowerPC or 68K,
MacTCP or OpenTransport, and any version of any web browser
(including AOL's), so we're looking for beta testers that use a wide
variety of systems. We're interested in testing the application with
novice computer users who only occasionally surf the web and power
users who visit hundreds of pages a day.

If you're interested in beta testing this exciting new application,
send a message to bward@scruznet.com with "beta test" in the subject
line. Please include a brief description of your experience level
and your computer system, including which MacOS version you have
installed and which browser version(s) you typically use. We'll
contact you in a few days with more information.

Thanks.

Subject: mac access

hello, i'm seeking assistance:
the facts:
i committed myself to teaching someone what i know about Photoshop.
we need access to a copy of Photoshop 4.0 and a PowerMacintosh fast enough
to run it.
the access is for training in Adobe Photoshop &, if it can be worked out,
use of the computer for photo-illustration work once his training has
advanced.
there's no funds: the access would need to be free or compensated for in
some non-monetary fashion (barter for services?)
given what he wants to use it for, bare minimum requirements are: either a
233MHz 604-based machine or a G3, with 128MB of RAM; a 17" (viewable)
monitor and the video RAM to display millions of colors; a 4GB hard drive;
and a copy of Adobe Photoshop 4.0 (not a copy of someone else's).
ideally, a 266MHz G3 with 288MB of RAM and a 21" viewable monitor with
the video RAM to display millions of colors would allow for
experimentation and growth.

i say "access" because he & i are in different parts of the ny-nj metro
area, so the resolution of this situation could be use of a machine at
location(s) and on a schedule to be determined or the arrangement of
receiving into his possession a machine similar to that previously
described.

any leads would be tremendously appreciated; systems and components near
what we're seeking are a huge help, too!
please cross-post and/or redistribute this as you see fit.
please respond by Thursday, January 21, 1998 at 1:00AM Eastern Standard

Subject: New G3 questions

I am on the verge of buying a new G3, to go with my "old" 233 meg G3. And to
replace a number of machines, a Se/30, a Mac IIvx, a LC/III... I am also
ready to buy a G3 14 inch powerbook

I understand that Apple is coming out with a number of new models of things,
so let me ask a few questions.

I use two laser printers, a personal LaserWriter, and a Laser Writer II,
connected by local talk, to the G3. I really love the convenience of having
both on. Will I be able to do this with the new machines, or do I want an
"old" G3 without the USB stuff. I also use a 56 K external modem and a zip
drive with this machine. I am really dubious about buying a machine that is
gong to make all my systems unusable. If I hurry, I can buy a machine that
does not have all this wonderful new stuff.

Assuming I get a 300 meg desk top model, what do I do with the 10Base-T (?)
stuff? Can I still use an external modem with this machine? And I think that
a jazz drive, with its increased capacity, is better for my back ups, so I
would not want it. I already have an external one anyway. Will I be able to
hook up one of these.

In passing, can anyone tell me why Apple is dong this to me and all its other
users.

Will I be able to use my 17 inch monitor with the new G3. Will I be able to
buy one of the current 19 or 20 inch monitors for the new G3.

Are there any parallel issues for the powerbooks. Can anyone tell me how much
the new 14 inch powerbooks weigh, in contrast to the Apple 180c?

I notice that my 17 inch monitor, which is an Apple 17 inch multiple display,
has plugs for speakers. Does this mean I am audio visual cap[able, or
what....

Thanks for the answers in advance.

Dear Digest readers,
I'd be interested to hear personal experiences with the G3/233

What have been the benefits and problems people have had after

don't need a new computer for what I do, but sometimes I wonder if I
can do better than my reliable 7200/75. Also how fast is the
SoftWindows 95 emulation on it. Will it for instance run Douglas
Adams Starship Titanic at a reasonable speed, or EA Sports John
Madden football. Please no responses from people who haven't yet
tried it. Is it possible to add the DVD toolkit to it? Is it
possible to add a 300Mhz processor to it once one can afford it? Are
there any software packages that don't work on it?

Does anyone have trouble using any of the following programs with it:
Kaleidoscope
WriteNow
GoMac
FinderPop
Microsoft Excel 5.0 (yes I know 98 is out but I don't want to upgrade
to it yet)
After Dark 4.0.3
Clarisworks 4.0.4v4
Quicken 5 (yes I know 98 is out, but there is no reason for me to upgrade yet)

Nisus Easy Alarms 2.1
Adobe Pagemill 3.0
BBEdit 4.0 (yes I know 5.0 is out...)
Stuffit Deluxe 4.5 (Yes I know 5.0...)

I would rather not try to upgrade unless I know all my current
software works with it.

Thank you.

Manticore is our first new font for 1999. It's based on an ornate

SCRIPT FONTS PAGE ONLINE - PLUS SECRET FONT
We've put a new page online devoted entirely to script fonts and
nothing but script fonts. We get a lot of requests for different script
styles, so we've gathered them all together in one place for easy
reference, plus we've put together a special package of just script fonts
at a reduced price. There's also a bonus demo font on this page. To check
it out go to http://www.ragnarokpress.com/scriptorium/scriptfonts

CELEBRATION PAGE ONLINE
Our Celebration package has been available for a while, but it's
been sort of a secret. Now that the wedding season is approaching we
wanted to make sure it got some appropriate exposure, because it offers
some excellent fonts and borders for weddings, anniversaries, parties and
the like. You can find it at http://www.ragnarokpress.com/celebration

NEW FONT LOCATOR ONLINE
Everyone seems to have a hard time finding just the font they want,
so in addition to our new search engine
(http://www.ragnarokpress.com/search.html), we've put a special page online
witha a complete alphabetical listing of fonts and links to see samples.
The listing isn't actually 100% complete, but it does include every font
we've released in the last two years, plus every older font we've updated
during that period. We'll add the rest as we get them updated. Those
who've already discovered it have apparently found it to be quite helpful.
It's at http://www.ragnarokpress.com/scriptorium/fontlist.html

MASTER FONTS PAGE UPDATED
For quite a while we've needed to bring the samples and info on our
Master Fonts page up to date. We finally completed this update with the
addition of information on three newer packages, along with nice samples.
Check it out at http://www.ragnarokpress.com/scriptorium/masterfonts

That's about it for now. Look for a new update soon, including news about
the long awaited new issue of Scriptorium Magazine.

Subject: Starmax CD Problems

Hi Folks,

I use a Starmax 3000/180 at work (the only Mac in an all PC shop),
running 7.5.3 and FWB CD toolkit software. I recently tried to update to
7.6.1 but the computer would not boot from a CD. I tried using "Startup
Disk" and rebooting with the "c" held down, but no luck. I can tell the
system is trying to access the cd at startup because I feel it
spinning-up. BTW, the CD is accessible from the desktop _after_ bootup
from the HD.

Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated..

TIA,

Rob

1) One enabled though the Control Panel, File Sharing, should stay on
until you turn it off. I believe that if you start File Sharing with
the Control Strip, it will not be enabled when you restart.

2) Perhaps some of your "older" Macs have dead batteries. Replace them.
(The batteries, not the Macs.)

3) If the batteries are OK, you could plop a utility like ShareDevil in
your Startup Items folder.

Subject: strange font behaviour

Info Mac helpers>

I have bought Adobe Acrobat. One of its features is that it converts an
image file, which contains text into actual text, which saves space and
allows you to say search the text part of a brochure or whatever for
specific words. Anyway,
I can't get this to work. I get a message saying that Font Arial Narrow
can't be found.

Now, I go into the Fonts folder in my system folder and start clicking on
the various fonts suitcases therein. All of them open to show examples of
the font in question EXCEPT Arial Narrow which comes up as a load of delete
symbols.

Strangely if you drag the font to the desktop it opens and you see text
just as you should.

I created a new suitcase by copying another one and moving the contents of
Arial Narrow into it. Now you can open the fonts and they look OK. But
after a restart I'm back to square one - the Arial Narrow font is garbage
again. I haven't done anything with Acrobat in the mean time so I don't
think that's the source of the problem.

I haven't had any other problems relating to this and I don't need this
feature of Acrobat, but now I come to check I find I don't have Arial
Narrow available in any other applications - Eudora, Word etc.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
> Ezra

Subject: Unrecognizable pdf files

Hello,

Whenever I get an PDF file from the Internet, it arrives in a strange
format that is not recognized by Acrobat Reader.
These pdf files are listed as document content_schedule.pdf.

When I try to open them in the Finder, I get a error message, saying that
the application content_schedule.pdf cannot open the file, and returning me
-39 as error code.
They can be opened, however, from Acrobat reader, with the open file command.

When I check their file type and creator with one the Norton utilities (v.
3.2), they are usually listed as TEXT and CARO, which seems to be the
regular type of an acrobat pdf document.

These files don't have any acrobat file icon: they simply look like files
in an unknown format.
I'm using a french version of Acrobat=81 Reader 3.01, which itself doesn't
bear the usual Icon.
I've rebuilt my desktop a few times, without affecting the display of the
applications or any of its documents 'icon.

All this happens aboard a Powerbook 1400, with a System C1- 7.6.1 (French
-Canadien system).
Even a recent reinstall of the system didn't change anything to this problem=

Any clue would be appreciated
Thanks,

Subject: Used Laptop

I am interested in buying a used Mac-based laptop but know nothing about
what I should get. I want to use it on travel in a motorhome for two
purposes: (1) I want to be able to move my Quicken files from my desktop to
the laptop and use it to keep track of financial data while on the road;
and (2) I plan to get DeLorme's Street Atlas with associated GPS receiver
to help in mapping. etc. The only concern wrt the Quicken requirement is to
determine the best procedure for transfering files from one computer to the
other. However, Street Atlas requires the following: 68030 or later, OS7.1
or later, 8Mb of Ram, 8 Mb Disk space, and a 650 Mb CD. In addition I would
like the laptop to have a color display and have a modem (internal or
external). What laptops would meet this requirement? Where can I find a
table of typical used prices for laptops? TIA.
