This also happened to me on installing 8.5.1, and I never got it fixed. But I
bought a used Laserwriter IINT at around the same time, and sinde I hardly
ever printed color anyway I have the Stylewriter sittign there waiting for
someone to tell me how to fix it. So I'd say this was not an isolated problem

Subject: (C) Surprise! OrangePC now works with Cable internet

Dear Digest readers,
In an amazing feet of magic OrangePC's Windows 95 software finally
caught on to the fact my Mac has a built in ethernet card. What's
more it now works with @home Cable internet. Took me six months to
figure out how to do it, but now that it works I am amazed. @home
even claims that it won't work. But here it does, and I think Mac
users have something to rejoice about. Now there is absolutely
nothing that won't run on a Mac.

I am still working out how it worked, but I can say that it is
possible under the following:

OrangePC 620 card AMD 6x86/200 Mhz with version 3.2 update of the
OrangePC drivers.
64MB of RAM on the OrangePC board.
Insignia Solutions SoftWindows 95 datadisk. Yes that's mixing two
of them together!

Even more amazing this feet was performed on a PowerMac 7200/75 and
on an external hard disk.

Anybody actually trying to do the same, please contact me, because
I'd like to know if there are ways to speed up the ethernet
connection to match that of the Mac's speed. Still it is remarkable
that it does work. Now running Netscape 4.0.5 for Windows 95 on a
Mac at 200 Mhz Pentium speeds. :-)

Sincerely,

Subject: (Q) Key command for "move to trash"?

What is the keyboard command for "move to trash" in System 8.1? The menu
shows command and a symbol I'm unfamiliar with (rectangle with a
triangular-shaped projection on the left, surrounding an "x"). Keycaps
says it's control-w, but pressing command-control-w while a folder is
highlighted does not in fact move it to the trash. What is it? This version
of Apple Help knows nothing of keyboard shortcuts.

Subject: [A] Macintosh 'ping' application

I have gotten several "try these" issues. OTTool, MacTCP watcher, MacPing,
PingFingMac, DNSMac, IPNetMonitor, and I'm sure there's more to come.

My findings are as follows...

OTTool - Freeware; Simple, Easy-to-use interface, but it was a slow download :(
MacTCP watcher - $10 shareware; Simple, easy-to-use interface also, but there's
               a $10 shareware fee. :)
MacPing - Only the demo version available, they wanted $99.00 for it; I thought
that was kind of rediculous. Fast download, and unable to open because
it requires the printer port open. I can't use my 56K modem (external)
and activate Appletalk through the chooser, so I deleted this.
PingFingMac, DNSMac, IPNetMonitor - I've heard good stories, but I decided to
                                  stay with Freeware. :)

Hope this helps.

Subject: Finder problem

I am experiencing an frustrating problem with Finder. Whenever I open an
application all the icons on my desktop dissapear. I can make them
reappear by clicking on Finder in the window in the upper right hand
corner of my screen. While it is not a serious problem, it is an irritating
one. I'm using a Performa 6300CD with 65 MB of RAM.

I have done all the usual things including:
trashing Finder so the system software builds a new one, rebuilding the
desktop and zapping the pram. I even reinstalled the system's software.
Has anyone a suggestion about what did you do?

I downloaded a piece of shareware yesterday called "SkipPrint" from the
InfoMac archives. It claims to let you do exactly what you want, though I
haven't had a chance to try it out yet. You might try that. I believe it
was in the "Cfg" subdirectory at InfoMac.

Hi, all,
This is a multiple post, hoping for some quick advice for a client
of mine. He's an graduate of the Naval Academy, a real gent, and quite an
old man, but new to computers. I want to help him. He has a 75 MHz PowerMac
7200 running, I believe, OS 8.5 and using a cable modem. His cable modem
provider is the kind where they get a fixed IP address and full-time
connection (as opposed to the kind where you have to log on). He's getting
a G3 300, but wants to get the 7200 working for one of his children.
Its keyboard stopping printing the "V" character. He got a new
keyboard but it had some kind of (unspecified) problems of its own so he
went back to the one without the "V". I suggested that he pull off the key
cap and blow some air inside. Does anyone have a better suggestion?
It's other problem is that he cannot shut down. It was okay before
he went away for a couple of weeks. Since he came home, it won't shut down.
He chooses "Shut Down" from the Special menu, but nothing happens. He has
to physically turn off the computer. I've asked him about all kinds of
things that might be running in the background, including screen savers,
fax software and the like, but he denies everything.
I had wondered if it might be the cable modem trying to be on line,
but he certainly had no problem with that before.
Does anyone have experience with that problem, and experience with
solving it? I know there's a fair amount of talk about it on MacFixIt, but
I sent him every suggestion I could find at that site, and there was no joy.
Any suggestions from the group? Thanks in advance. You guys are great.

Tim,

The program you are looking for is MacPing (3.0.4):

MacPing(tm) is an IP and AppleTalk network testing tool. Just as sonar or
radar systems send a signal and wait for an echo, MacPing sends "probe
packets"
(ICMP or AppleTalk echo packets) into the network and waits for responses
from the various devices on the network. The arrival of these response
packets (or the
lack of responses), along with the time the responses take to arrive, can
tell a great deal about the network.

MacPing differs from other network testing programs in that it tests all
the devices on a particular network in parallel. This allows you to
compare the performance
of different devices on the same wire to determine the cause of network
problems.

MacPing can test devices on anywhere on your AppleTalk network - simply
choose the desired zone from the Zone: popup menu. If that zone contains
multiple
networks, choose the desired network number from the Network: popup.

MacPing can also test IP networks. You can enter a host name or IP
address and MacPing will test that device. In addition, MacPing can
automatically determine a
host's subnet, and test all the devices on that subnet.

MacPing 3.0 comes in two versions: the MacPing PRO tests an unlimited
number of AppleTalk zones and IP devices. The standard MacPing is limited
to testing
networks with up to five AppleTalk zones, and unlimited IP devices.

You can download it at: <http://www.dartmouth.edu/netsoftware/macping/>

Subject: Macs Print to HP1120c

I have a HP 1120c printer I purchased mainly for use with a mac, with that
printer offering a good price point for color 11x17 printing.

I also purchased a HP JetDirect 150X print server I was planning to connect
to an NT4 server I have running... that didn't work out too well, so I'm
looking for a mac solution:

How would you propose to hook up a PC printer to a Mac? If your answer is
PowerPrint, it doesn't support the 1120C (I've tried it and sent it back).
Is there some other software driver, or even a PPD or whatnot I could use
to somehow get this printer working? (eg: PPD, NT server, JetDirect).

I appreciate any help you can offer. =) Thanks.

I've had the same experience with Systems from 7.6.1 to 8.1 with Netscape
4.0x. However, I believe it is particularly related to the processing of
certain HTML tables. I notice the slowdown specifically on pages that
display stock and mutual fund values; my wife has seen it on a web based
bulletin board she uses. For most web pages I don't see this particular
slowdown.

For what it's worth, the exact same web pages will render in IE several
times faster.

I would use some universal file opener such as CanOpener to try to open the
Preferences file for NotePad, to recover the text.

You could go to your MacOS Easy Open Control Panel and click the "Delete
Preferences" button, then create an Extensions Manager set containing only
MacOS Easy Open, AppleScript, and whatever you might absolutely require in
order to run your computer, and rebuild the desktop. Then rebuild again
with your regular set active. That MIGHT recover the file.
