8-Ball Emulator 8 - Yes, It's Pool. The great old Billiards. There's no
game like it. Embark on a simple game of 8-ball. It's a one-on-one
alternating barhopping trip, except there's no bar and you don't actually
go anywhere. The point of the game is to have fun and burn time. If you're
really good, you may want to burn your opponent too, maybe get a new pair
of shoes. You always use the white ball to knock the colored balls into
the dark holes in the ground. The last ball that the big white ball has to
knock down is the pure black ball. Hey, I didn't develop it, blame that on
the French. With two people, the purpose of the game is similar, now you
have to knock out all the balls of your style (the first solid or stripe
knocked out determines that), then axe out the 8-ball. You can reposition
the cue ball if your opponent pocketed it, or if you're particularly
inclined to cheating.

HyperSlider 1.8.5 (FAT) (Copyright 1997 by Wolfgang Thaller)

english and french version (select the language from the Edit menu, quit and
restart the application)

creating interactive slide shows many transitions effects simple multimedia
authoring (combine graphics, sounds, movies..)

(This application is a fat binary that runs native on both Power Macs and 68k
Macs.)

HyperSlider is a shareware-program ($10) written by Wolfgang Thaller. It is a
tool for creating and viewing interactive (and serial) slide shows and
presentations with hyperlinks between the slides. Just command-drag a rectangle
on a slide to create a hyperlink! In addition you can - add movies to your shows
- place text and graphics on your slides - link sounds to the transitions -
create stand-alone players (registered users only) - choose among many
transition effects - and much more HyperSlider tries to preload slides into
memory for better performance. Note: The slides cannot be created or
changed with HyperSlider, they have to be prepared in PICT-format by
another program. Iit is also possible to view slides directly from a Photo
CD. The folder HyperSlider 1.8.5 contains the application, a user-manual
and an Apple Guide file for on-line help. If you want to view the demo show
described in the manual you should get the demo slide collection
"hyper-slider-demo-show.hqx", which is posted separately.

Version 1.8.5 should give you better stability, more cursors, and a possibility
to point to files that "cannot be found". For more details see the enclosed

Subject: [*] MacSpeaker 1.6: Loudspeaker measurement

MacSpeaker is a program which handles measurements in the audio range,
above all, loudspeaker measurements. MacSpeaker makes use of the Macintosh
sound hardware so that you do not need an expensive Analog-Digital
conversion card. You only need a measuring microphone and perhaps a
microphone amplifier. You will get a professional measuring system at a
fraction of the price of comparable systems! Because the Macintosh has
excellent sound hardware, the measurement accuracy of MacSpeaker is
comparable to professional systems: 44.1 kHz 16-bit sampling; that is, CD
quality. MacSpeaker controls all important loudspeaker measurements: From
the measurement of the impulse response, a Fourier transform computes the
frequency response of the loudspeaker (absolute and phase). Measurement
errors due to unavoidable sound reflection from the walls can be filtered
out. Thus, with MacSpeaker, you can measure the "frequency response in an
anechoic chamber." Additionally, MacSpeaker can compute a so-called
"waterfall diagram": this reveals the resonance behavior of the loudspeaker
plotting time over frequency and amplitude. As a special feature,
MacSpeaker can use an optional user-defined signal as measurement signal.
Thus, for example, you can make burst or distortional measurements. With a
little bit of imagination, you can fulfill your various desires. MacSpeaker
is also available in german. Send any questions or comments to
<matthias_brennwald@macworld.ch>.

Subject: [*] newtons speaking

Apple didn't release its speech synthesis in the mp2000, but did release voice
recording. My program and recommended hardware will get you some of the features
of the new mp2000 in case you are waiting for the 2010 with more speech
recognition like I am. I made a little program to make all the newton message
pads be able to talk just a little (I may work out a crude phonetics
newtonscript plugin later). You may recall they didn't support pict 2's and
after I did they came up with newton press which I enjoyed pict 2's in. I
hope I maybe inspire them again.

My tiny program takes a system 7 file, the kind you get by dragging
an alert from the system or convert from a simplesound recording with freeware
SoundApp 2.2.3, and turns it into a slurpee file that can be put into the newton
sound soup with newton running slurpee. To see that the sound works, you might
use bitsound, freeware available on Steve Weyer's pages. Well, now I've gotten
"line in" for <$1000. What about lineout? Used radio shack telephone pickup on
tiny newton speaker (Radio Shack Cat. No. 44-533 B with 1/8 " miniplug). About
$6. Radio Shack also has $10 tiny amplifier-speaker for phone pickups that works
admirably with above (if you set the volume down a bit to miss processor noise),
Catalogue # 277-1008C. I continue to develope a gps navigation program for the
trimble scoutmaster connecting with NMEA sentences. Few people own such an
expensive gps unit, so I am, so far, my only beta tester. Speech recognition and
synthesis will go nicely with my program.

This is a plugin color scheme to be used with Kaleidoscope, Greg Landweber et
al.'s wonderful sharware enhancement that gives you the look of tomorrow's Mac

scheme, and should replace Red Plastic in the Info-Mac Archive. Red
Buttons adds support for Kaleidoscope 1.5.x. In addition, it comes with a
set of silver 3-D system icons and a set of red cursors that blend well
with my color scheme.

Ever since Kaleidoscope first came out in beta, I have been tinkering with
my own color scheme, combining features found in some of the original
plugins and in some of the schemes that have since been posted to the net.
Red Buttons combines red plastic pushbuttons similar to those used in the
"sherbet" scheme with the basic gray plastic window color of the original
Aaron. There are many
enhancements, however, so you'll have to download Red Buttons and try it out for
yourself.

Red Buttons is funware. If you like it, enjoy it. It's the least I can do to
repay the net community for what it has given me.

Spike - is a batch movie analyzer that can determine the playability of
QuickTime files from specified target media and specified target platforms.
Spike offers many of the features of Apple's unsupported MovieAnalyzer,
although Spike is updated for QuickTime 2.5 and beyond. Spike includes a
suite of options that give you complete control over QuickTime data rate
spikes. Spike can process batches of QuickTime files as large as you like.
Most QuickTime software reports an average data rate after compression.
Many people use this figure to make the decision about playability on their
target platform. Problems are caused by the fact that the average data rate
does not tell you anything about momentary data-spikes which may occur in a
movie. A movie that reports an average data rate of 150k can still have
many spikes in excess of 500k. Such spikes will cause playback from CD-ROM
or the web to stutter or glitch. Spike will identify these problems.

In a nutshell, no. It simply won't run. You could use Apple's generic
Telecom software (but I wouldn't recommend it...), or some generic
software such as Delrina FaxPro (terribly DOS-Like...), so I'm afraid
you're out of luck.

Subject: Extensions

How can I determine what the various extensions I have do and which ones
are required for a given application? I have been having an occassional
freeze while using Photoshop and tried to use Conflict Catcher to find the
culprit but when it selected half the extensions to turn off, Photoshop was
unable to execute because some essential extension was not loaded. There
was no identification of which one it was. If I knew the needed extensions
I could lock them in memory and then proceed with use of Conflict Catcher's
tests. Also, I may well have extensions loading for which I have absolutely
no need. Based on the name of the extension I can only guess what it does.

Subject: Modem is /too/ reliable...

Greetings! A friend of mine lives in an area where the caller ID tone or
signal is apparently different than the normal one, and /doesn't/
disconnect her modem. This is a good thing... technically. Unfortunately,
she needs to be kicked off when another call comes in, and her modem
doggedly clings to the line, leaving hel clueless about incoming messages.

Is there any way to increase the sensitivity of a modem using init
strings, or tweak things such that it does disconnect? She's /not/
turning off caller ID when she dials... that's known.

You could put them in image file format, using ShrinkWrap, or better yet
the new Disk Copy (v6.1.2) format, then mount the images.

You could use ShrinkWrap or Apple's DiskCopy 6.1.2 to make a disk image
of the whole CD on your hard drive, then mount them with the same
utility. They'll then appear as volumes.

Presumably these are folders created by dragging the CD to the hard disk.

You can use ShrinkWrap 2.x or DiskCopy 6.1.2 to create disk images of the
CDs, which will then mount and look just like a regular volume.

Using DiskCopy 6.1.2, you can store these disk images in a read-only
compressed format, which can save a significant amount of space [be
prepared to wait a while for the compression to occur, however].

I need to run a Web browser on an old Plus with 4.5 megs of RAM, running
System 7.0, just to check html that I'm writing on it. This is not my main,
or even second Mac, so don't tell me to replace it--I'm going to use it at
my vacation home to get some coding done. I remember hearing about some
low-level browser that would run eating less RAM than Netscape, etc. Where
can I get a suitable tool. Recommendations for other early versions of
things like Newswatcher, etc. would be welcome too: just remember the
highest priority is saving disk space and RAM.

Is there a site where somebody has put together Internet tools for the
seriously old Mac for downloading?
