We would like to announce the release of BilgePump, a port of Berkeley
DB to the Macintosh. The source base of Berkeley DB was kept intact, and
the bulk of what BilgePump does is translate Apple Events in a way that
allows Macintosh programs to interface with Berkeley DB. A search
function was also added.

The file name is BilgePump-0.9.sit.hqx, and was uploaded to
ftp://macgifts:macgifts@info-mac.org

Subject: [*] BOOM 1.2.3

BOOM 1.2.3

What's BOOM?
BOOM is an arcade game in the grand tradition, bringing the
playability and feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the Macintosh.
It can be described as "Bomberman meets Doom". Actually, I took the
basic Bomberman idea and dropped it in a "Super-Deformed Doom"
scenario (whatever this means).
If you don't know what Bomberman¸ and Doom¸ are, definitely you've
never played a computer game. This is the right time to start.

BOOM's main features are:
* Smooth sprite based animations in 256 colors
* 8 different soundtracks and multi-channel sound effects
* Simultaneous two players action
* 80 different levels
* 10 different enemy characters varying in intelligence and weaponry
* Mid-game monsters and a final Super Boss

System Requirements
PowerPC processor;
6 MBytes free memory;
Mac OS 7.0.1 or later;
640x480 or larger monitor supporting 256 colors;
Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

Recommended Configuration
Mac OS 8.5 or later;
InputSprocket 1.1 or later;
QuickTime¸ 4 or later with 'QuickTime Authoring' component installed.

What's new in BOOM 1.2.3

     * Fixed a bug, introduced in version 1.2.2, that caused the game
to crash during startup on all iMacs (in fact, it failed to set the
monitor depth to 8-bit).
     * Fixed a bug, introduced in version 1.2.2, that caused the game
to crash when opening some dialogs on systems with Appearance Manager
older than 1.1 (for ex. Mac OS 8.1).
     * Fixed a bug that caused the game to crash when opening the Info
dialog a second time.
     * Fixed a small memory leak (about 1k) occurring when starting a
new game or opening a saved game.
     * Now, when changing keyboard settings, the program checks if
Caps Lock is on and asks the user to switch it off.

MATH DITTOS 2: Fact Controlled SUBTRACTION for Special Learners v1.6
NEEDS: Acrobat Reader 3.0 or better
®1995-2000 Steven L. Wood

MATH DITTOS 2: Fact Controlled SUBTRACTION for Special Learners is a
unique tool for teaching subtraction. This set of PDF worksheets allows
students to compute while learning their facts. The fact bars, strips,
etc. included on each page include all and only the facts used on the
page. The worksheets are designed to be as uncluttered as possible, with
large numbers and very few problems on each page. Fact support is
included on ALL pages.

All facts presented in a factstrip or factbar are tested at least once on
the page. Emphasis is usually given to the newest facts. No other facts
should be on the page The "zero minus zero" fact is assumed, and if
necessary, should be directly taught.

Twenty-eight blackline masters comprise the basic package, with a
complement of twenty-eight word problem worksheets. Each page contains
fact bars presenting and previewing the facts to be used on the page.
Worksheets follow a logical and thorough progression through the
operation of subtraction. Complete answer sheets are included. Although
these pages may be used successfully for initial instruction in
subtraction, they were designed as a review for students who had tried
and failed with a traditional approach. Also included are color masters
and small and large flashcard masters.

MD2:FCSfSpL is unique in that it is published only as a series of
computer documents, and in that it supplies comprehensive fact support.
This feature allows students who have not, or can not, master their facts
to continue learning the process of subtraction.

The MATH DITTOS 2 series now includes three fact controlled books
published only as computer documents. MATH DITTOS 2: Fact Controlled
MULTIPLICATION for Special Learners and MATH DITTOS 2: Fact Controlled
ADDITION & SUBTRACTION for Special Learners are also available in PDF
format.

Greg's Browser 2.7 (20 June 2000)
by Greg Landweber, author of Kaleidoscope
Shareware Fee: $20

Winner of a MacUser Shareware Award for Best Utility, Greg's Browser
lets you quickly and easily navigate your way through the files on
your hard disk, giving a compact multi-pane view of your folder
hierarchy. Greg's Browser was originally based on the NeXT OS
directory browser, which is the same model that Apple will be using
for the multiple column view in Mac OS X.

Version 2.7 now lets you edit file type and creator codes by clicking
the file kind at the bottom of the Browser window or by pressing
<command>-<return>. It also adds an option for live window resizing
in the Browser Preferences box. (Note that live resizing is extremely
processor intensive and works well only on very fast machines.) In
addition, this version takes full advantage of the StuffIt Engine
from Aladdin Systems, letting you directly manipulate the contents of
StuffIt 5 archives. There are several other minor changes, including
improvements to the file info displayed at the bottom of the Browser
window and support for Appearance sound effects under Mac OS 8.5 or
later.

Subject: [*] Photo Viewer 4.0

Photo Viewer is a simple Macintosh program for browsing folders full of
images. It works with images, such as those created by Adobe Photoshop or
Kodak Picture Transfer, which have a PICT resource that serves as a preview.
It presents one or more browsing windows, displaying an array of these
previews. Clicking on a preview tries to display it. Option clicking on a
preview launches the relevant application to display it. Photo Viewer uses
QuickTime to interpret images.

Use the pop up menu in the upper left hand of the browser window to navigate
folders. Use the Next and Previous buttons to look at different pages of
previews. Resize the window to show more or fewer previews.

Photo Viewer also works with Adobe Illustrator files and probably those of
other drawing programs, but it cannot display these. Use option-click to
launch the appropriate drawing program.

This program is freeware, made with REALbasic. Feel free to use it or
distribute it, but do give credit to Kaleberg Symbionts at www.kaleberg.com.

The Book of Changes 3.3.2

This program is a version of the I Ching. For centuries, the I Ching has
been used both as an oracle to predict the future, and as a source of
deep wisdom. The querent asks a question, then drops three coins six
times. Each drop determines one line of a hexagram, whether is solid or
broken, moving or unmoving. The resulting six-lined figure is then
interpreted.

Even if you have no interest in divination, the I Ching can offer
valuable insight into your own psyche, shedding light on how you really
feel about a problem.

Subject: Mac OS 7.6 screen shot

Ken Lebmann wrote:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I have a performa 6400, which when loaded with 7.5.3, does fine with taking
a picture of the screen, Shift + Command + 3. This puts the picture on the
hard disk, with a label "Picture l" and so on, as many pictures as desired.
Now my daughter recently loaded OS 7.6, and of course, the screen shot
doesn't work any more. I get a copy of the screen on the 'clipboard', but
can't transfer this material from the clipboard to any other file, such as a
word processor, printer, etc., and frankly I miss the Shift + Command + 3
combo from OS 7.5.3. Any ideas?

Thanks ahead of time.
Sincerely, Ken Lehmann, Fairfield, CT 06432

I am running 7.6.1 and Cmd-Shift-3 screen capture works just fine saving the
results to PictureX on the hard-drive, not to the clip board. Tested on
machines running OS 8.6 and 9.0.4, works there too. Anyone know if there is
a control panel setting somewhere which affects this?

Subject: launch file sharing = frozen system

Every time I launch the File Sharing control panel my system comes to a
complete freeze. This happens with a full system as well as a minimal system
boot up. I have installed fresh copies of the file sharing cp and extension
and trashed the Apple Prep file. I do not know what else to try. I have a
G4/450 running OS 9.0.4.

TIA,
Julius Friede

P.S. This didn†t happen with OS 8.6, same machine.

A list of time servers is available the web at the University of
Delaware. It is located at:

         <http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2.htm>

It's always best to use one on your local network if one is
available. Otherwise, use one that is closest to you.

Sure, Julian. Any Network Time Protocol (NTP) compliant server will
work. You can visit <http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp/> to learn more
about NTP and to find a listing of public time servers available to
you!
