The Comp.Sys.Mac.Programmer Digest is moderated by Mark Aiken
(marka@ee.mcgill.ca).

The digest is a collection of article threads from the internet
newsgroups comp.sys.mac.programmer.help, csmp.tools, csmp.misc and
csmp.games. It is designed for people who read news semi-regularly and
want an archive of the discussions. If you don't know what a
newsgroup is, you probably don't have access to it. Ask your systems
administrator(s) for details. If you don't have access to news, you
may still be able to post messages to the group by using a mail server
like anon.penet.fi (mail help@anon.penet.fi for more information).

Each issue of the digest contains one or more sets of articles (called
threads), with each set corresponding to a 'discussion' of a particular
subject. The articles are not edited; all articles included in this digest
are in their original posted form (as received by our news server at
ee.mcgill.ca). Article threads are not added to the digest until the last
article added to the thread is at least two weeks old (this is to ensure that
the thread is dead before adding it to the digest). Article threads that
consist of only one message are generally not included in the digest.

The digests can be obtained by email, ftp or through the World Wide Web.

This is the August issue of the MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial. Over the
last two years we have covered many topics relating to becoming more
productive with your Mac. Also, literally hundreds of tips have been
published to assist our members. Some of the other benefits of the
newsletter are:

- This month's tutorial was Formating and partioning your Hard Disk with
Hard Disk Toolkit
- Membership in the private MacTalk Mailing List
- Membership in the MacAssistant Online User Group
- Great offers and discounts on hardware and software
- Monthly OneClick Tutorial written by WestCode Software
- Special pricing for User Group Newsletter Editors
- Members favorite web sites
- MacAssistant Web Site located at:
http://www.macassistant.com

Past tutorials have included Clarisworks, Launcher, Arranging your Hard
Disk, Formatting of Hard Disks, Fonts, Apple Menu Options, The Black Art
of SCSI and many more.

Future tutorials will include Mac OS8, Setting up a network at home,
Using PlainTalk, Hard Disk Partitioning, Using the Scrapbook, Claris
Emailer, and others at members requests.

The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and
tutorials. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are
useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how to use your
Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice and intermediate
users. Each issue includes many tips about using your Mac. The tutorials
are accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article. This is
a shareware product that has even more information for those that
register. This month's tutorial article is available to subscribers
only.

This newsletter is distributed as a DocMaker application. No other
software is needed.

Subject: [*] Default Folder D-2.7.6 - Open/Save Enhancer (German)

Following is a submission of the German version of Default Folder 2.7.6.
It should be archived alongside the English version, replacing Default
Folder D-2.7.3.

Default Folder is a shareware control panel that enhances Open and Save
dialog boxes to make it easier for you to manage files on your Macintosh.
It provides many of the essential features of the commercial SuperBoomerang
and Directory Assistance utilities, but without the infrequently used
extras that take their toll in compatibility, memory, and CPU usage. And
it's fully compatible with Mac OS 8!

Default Folder's time-saving Open and Save dialog enhancements allow you to:

- Set up a default folder for any or all applications.
- Switch among recently used folders from a pop-up menu.
- See available disk space and switch between disks from a pop-up menu.
- Click on a Finder window to display it in an Open or Save dialog.
- Open the folder shown in an Open or Save dialog in the Finder.
- Create folders, get information (including changing name, type, and
creator), and move items to the Trash from within file dialogs.
- "Rebound" back to the last file you used.
- Make "Replace" the default option instead of "Cancel" when saving
a file with the same name as an existing file.
- Speed up the display of Open and Save dialogs by turning off custom
color icons in the file list.

Default Folder will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher,
and is accelerated for PowerPC. In addition to the standard internet

This is a patch to the toolbar of Netscape Navigator 4.0.3 (I am not for
certain if this would or would not work on Communicator, I imagine it would
be similar, the ID's may differ). It requires use and knowledge of ResEdit
2.1.3

Attached is a SimpleText document describing how to perform the patch and
some accompanying rescources.

This patch to Navigator will allow you to do 3 things:

1) Change the URL of the "Search" button.
2) Change the submenus and URLs of the "Guide" button.
3) Change the icon of the "Guide" button.

Subject: [*] OMS SysEx Sender 1.1

OMS SysEx Sender 1.1 is a simple application for transferring
MIDI system exclusive (or "sysex") messages to and from MIDI
devices under OMS. A popup menu allows the selection of the
device in your OMS studio setup which will receive the sysex
messages.

OMS SysEx Sender 1.1 should replace OMS SysEx Sender 1.0 (which
only includes the "send" function) if the latter still exists in
your archive. This version also adds Finder icons.

OMS SysEx Sender 1.1 is distributed in two versions: a Power PC
version and a 68000 version. I suggest the following locations
for them:

Subject: [*] PowerMenu 2.0.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the PowerMenu package.

PowerMenu is the definitive, comprehensive Contextual Menu utility.
PowerMenu adds powerful commands to the Finder's Contextual Menu under
MacOS 8, and provides its own Contextual Menu for System 7 users. Only
PowerMenu's wide range of commands lets you:

*Open selected files into any running application
*Open selected files into any other application on your drive
*Copy or make an alias of selected files into target folders of your
choosing
*Quickly open commonly used files or launch any application right from your
Contextual Menu

That's not all! PowerMenu also offers the following features:

*A pop-up menu, accessible from any application, that lets you quickly open
or launch your commonly used files and applications with a single click.
*Fully hierarchical menus to allow you to group items into submenus for even
faster access
*Multithreaded operation; PowerMenu rebuilds your menus in the background
while you work, so even very large menus appear instantly
*Takes full advantage of the Contextual Menu under MacOS 8, but is still
fully compatible with System 7!

Version 2.0.1 (September 21st, 1997):

Fixed memory handling and stability bugs in v2.0. Also added icons to the
Quick Access popup menu and automatic stripping of leading spaces in alias
names to help with item reordering. Also, aliases to folders are now not
expanded by default; can still expand aliases to folders by putting a
trailing plus on their name.

menus are all fully hierarchical, and are automatically rebuilt in the

PowerMenu v2.0.1, released Sept 21st, fixes a number of memory
management and stability bugs in v2.0. In addition, it adds icons
to the system-wide popup menu, and makes reordering menu items
easier.

PowerMenu is heavily customizable and is optimized for both
Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers, meaning it will run at full
speed on whatever model you use. PowerMenu requires MacOS 8, System
7.5.x, or System 7.1.x with the Scriptable Finder installed. PowerMenu
is $15US shareware.

Subject: TEKS Master 1.0 Demo

Announcing the release of TEKS Master 1.0. This software has been developed
to expedite the distribution of the TEKS information to the educational
community. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) was developed by
the Texas Education Agency as a result of legislation contained in Senate
Bill 1. TEKS were developed for sixteen content areas. This is the first
significant revision of curriculum for public education since the Essential
Elements were implemented in 1984.

The most important features of TEKS Master Software are :

* Works on most Macintosh=AE computers.
* TEKS information can be retrieved quickly.
* Specific text can be found using the find feature.
* TEKS Master Software is a stand-alone application.
(This means that you can install it on your Mac and
use this software regardless of the word processor
     that you are using.)
* You can export text to be used in other applications.
* Does not require a lot of memory to run.
* Can be distributed via intranet networks.
* Each grade level has a seperate chapter for easy
   access.
* Does not weigh 80 pounds and use three feet of
shelf space like the paper version does. ( Measurements
are approximations based on previous versions of the
   TEKS. :-) )
* Copies can be distributed at a fraction of the cost of
printing, distributing and storing paper copies.

Subject: [*] VOODOO version control integrated with BBEdit

Not only software developers have to deal with different versions
of their files. Many other people (web publishers, designers, ...) also
have the problem of managing numerous versions of their files.
VOODOO spells the end of this version chaos by managing all versions
of all files clearly and space-economically.

While the graphical project browser of VOODOO can still be used
to archive and access your versions, all BBEdit users can now
benefit of our new BBEdit plugin that allows you to control
VOODOO's mopst version control features directly
from inside BBEdit. So you will no longer have to leave your favorite
editor to perform your version control activities. Check it out -
you'll like it.

You will need version 1.8 of VOODOO
   http://www.unisoft.co.at/e/products/voodoo.html
and version 4.5 of BBEdit
   http://www.barebones.com/bbedit.html
to use this plugin.

For Newcomers - What is VOODOO?
===============================
VOODOO (Versions Of Outdated Documents Organized Orthogonally)
is a stand-alone version control tool with a neat graphical user
interface offering many features for the simple and clear management
of projects in which files evolve in numerous versions. The tool
manages not only variants and revisions of single files,
but of whole software projects (multiple files, multiple users,
multiple variants, access rights, project structure,
project history, etc.).

VOODOO differs from previous source code control systems in its
orthogonal approach to version management. This means that for
every component of a project hierarchy you can not only store
its revision history but also different variants of the same
component. The orthogonal organization of revisions and
variants leads to a much clearer organization than with other
tools which use trees for organizing variants and revisions.
